Ciao belli! Welcome back to The Healthy Italian Goddess, where we celebrate la dolce vita with balance as our true superpower. Today I’m sharing a lesson my body taught me the hard way: going all-out in the gym or pushing that may lead to discomfort and doesn’t always equal progress. Sometimes it equals strain, setbacks, and frustration. I used to believe that harder was always better — heavier weights, higher intensity, more reps. Then my lower back felt a bit strained and that’s when I remembered the beautiful Italian art of modification: keep the benefits, lose the harm, and still feel strong, radiant, and free.
Listening to the Body’s SignalsA few months ago I was swinging a kettlebell in front of me with enthusiasm. It felt powerful… until I started to feel a dull ache in my lower back. I stopped immediately. No heroics. No “just one more set.” I simply put the bell down and asked myself what I could do instead that still challenged my core and shoulders without compressing my spine. That moment changed everything. I realized I had been treating my body like a machine instead of the living, feeling temple it is. Italian wisdom has always whispered equilibrio — balance. My workouts needed the same grace I bring to a plate of fresh Caprese or a quiet morning on the balcony overlooking the sea. My Favorite Low-Strain SwapsHere is exactly how I modified my routine so I can train consistently without the injury risk:- Instead of front-swinging kettlebells — I now focus on controlled goblet holds, side bends with light weights, or simply bodyweight core work that keeps my spine neutral.
- Instead of traditional sit-ups — I do standing knee lifts while holding light dumbbells. I bring one knee up toward my chest (or as high as feels good), lower with control, and switch sides. My core still works, my hip flexors stay happy, and I never have to get on the floor.
- Instead of push-ups — Wall pilates (or wall push-ups with a slow, controlled tempo) give me the same upper-body engagement without the wrist or shoulder pressure of the floor version.
- Instead of regular jumping jacks — I do star jumping jacks. I step one foot out to the side while raising both arms overhead into a gentle star shape, then return to center and repeat on the other side. There is a soft bounce if I feel like it, but no high-impact jumping. My heart rate still rises, my coordination improves, and my joints stay grateful.
- Instead of high-intensity cardio — I choose low-intensity steady-state movement. I don’t jog. I hike. Trails, hills, fresh air, and the rhythmic sound of my feet on earth feel infinitely better than pounding pavement.
I also refuse to get down on the ground for most exercises. It’s a personal preference rooted in comfort and joint ease. Everything I do can be performed standing or at a wall, which keeps my sessions accessible and enjoyable. These swaps aren’t “easier.” They are smarter. They allow me to show up more often, recover better, and actually enjoy the process. Strength without strain is the ultimate bella lifestyle. My father Leonardo always used to tell me from an early age to "Work Smarter, Not Harder". He was so right! The Same Philosophy in the KitchenModeration and balance don’t stop at movement. They flavor every choice on my plate and in my glass. I don’t use refined sugar. When I want sweetness I either go without or reach for pure, all-natural stevia. If a craving for soda hits, I grab sparkling spring water or a can of Zevia — naturally sweetened and free of the artificial stuff that leaves me feeling foggy. Pasta nights still happen (we are Italian, after all!), but the noodles have evolved. Zucchini noodles (zoodles) or roasted spaghetti squash satisfy the craving for long strands with far fewer carbs and more fiber. When I want something closer to traditional pasta I choose chickpea flour pasta, high-quality gluten-free options, or authentic Italian pasta made with carefully selected ingredients that are gentler on the gut. The sauce is always rich with olive oil, garlic, fresh tomatoes, and herbs — never heavy or overly processed. Dessert becomes Greek yogurt with berries and a dusting of stevia, or a square of dark chocolate with almonds. The pleasure remains. The aftermath is lighter. Why Balance Is the Real SuperpowerPushing through pain teaches the body that discomfort is normal. Modifying teaches the body that it is listened to and respected. Over time that respect builds resilience, consistency, and a quiet confidence that no PR can match. I still lift. I still move with intention. I still sweat. I simply refuse to sacrifice longevity for a temporary high. My lower back is happier. My energy is steadier. My mood is brighter. And I can keep doing the things I love — hiking coastal paths, dancing in the kitchen, writing in my gratitude journal, and living la vita è bella — without interruption. If you have been feeling that little warning signal in a joint or muscle, consider this your permission slip. You do not have to quit. You only have to adjust. Trade the move that hurts for the move that helps. Trade the intensity that depletes for the rhythm that sustains. Your body is not a project to be conquered. It is a lifelong companion to be partnered with. Treat it with the same care you would give a precious olive tree that has stood for generations: prune when needed, nourish consistently, and trust that steady growth produces the sweetest fruit. So today I invite you to try one modification. Maybe it’s the star jumping jack. Maybe it’s standing knee lifts. Maybe it’s sparkling water instead of soda. Notice how your body responds when it feels protected instead of punished. Balance is my superpower — and it can be yours too. Stronger every day, with love and equilibrio,
The Healthy Italian Goddess is all about my Body • Mind • Spirit • Soul • Italian Heart La vita è bella and La Dolce Vita Universal connection! I just have to choose wisely and like I said before for me it's all about trial and error but after my DNA test things made more sense to me after seeing a post about the best diet for my DNA. I apply that across the board too and it has really worked out for me. Italians live a very joyful and slow paced life. Here in Canada it's the opposite and I had to re-calibrate and stop following anything or anyone that contradicts my DNA, culture and customs too. Even though I live in Canada currently, Italia will always live in me and I am very grateful for that.
